Cavallerizzo is the project of rebuilding a small village in the countryside of Calabria, collapsed in 2005 and relocated in a nearby area: 264 new houses built on two three-storey, 5 neighborhood squares ana a central piazza.
The reconstruction of Cavallerizzo is the result of a very special experience, urban and social together, which was born by an emergency housing and turns along the way in the participated process of rebuilding a community.
The old Cavallerizzo, of Albanian matrix, is a village of immigrants, that has low-quality housing and quality of physical and social spaces. Looking at the old village is the basis of the project (the work of the scribe). What has been transported from the old to the new village (the work of the translator) is the system of the five original neighborhoods (the gjitonie, the gjiton in Albanian is a neighbor), the structure and the physical connections of public space, the immaterial neighborhood relations.
The shape of the new town is designed on five petals, built terraces in the agricultural landscape. Cavallerizzo has unity of the main fronts on squares and street, projections on gardens. The control of the volume articulation on the back allowed to design houses always with different surfaces.
Houses are all alike (unity) and all different (each house is tailored onr each family), and have access stairs to the house directly from the square, flat roofs, pitched roofs, vaulted roofs with significant heights in the interior space, balconies and terraces.
Between January and July 2008 we asked each owner: do you like your new house? On the final project (the work of the doctor) were received requests for internal changes, different organization of the house and displacement of houses among gjitonie.
Meetings with inhabitants were held in the Prefecture of Cosenza and 186 units have participated (75%). Of these, 157 have submitted change requests, 151 were successful requests. These meetings showed the house to the inhabitants, getting into specifics with each of them. The construction of a house is a matter of individual memory within the context of the community.
A project tailored on people, started without a direct participation program and become, by the nature of the project and the vitality of the community, a project dedicated to each resident unit.
Cavallerizzo under construction is not made of individual houses (and Cavallerizzo is in southern Italy, Calabria), is not on the edge of the nearby city of Cosenza. The scale is that of a small town with its conflicts and consensus.
The project costed 60 million Euros for 42,000 square meters of houses and public buildings, that is 950 euro / sqm of construction cost or 1,300 Euros / sqm including urbanization and public spaces.
From February to October 2011 houses have been delivered. On December 2012 Cavallerizzo was fully inhabited, on April 2012 the first procession of San Giorgio in the new village.
Bringing Cavallerizzo as an example will mean to tell a project that considers the context as the main aspect (homes, spaces and communities) and describe a process with people participation. This project does not represents a universal model, but attempts to interpret and to read the specific context of Cavallerizzo. A project that has the ambition that the people can really go to live there and to live well.
