This is a small, square, single-story house located in Moriyama Ward, Nagoya City.
The site faces a grove of trees, something you wouldn't expect to find in Nagoya City, and is on a slope with an elevation difference of 1.2 to 5.4 meters from the (sloping) front road.
While struggling to figure out how to plan for this difference in elevation, we decided to create a house that would be "small enough to fit" on a slightly flat spot somewhere in the middle.
The theme for the floor and cross-section plans was "encompassing size within a small space," and we approached the issue of how to create a small yet large space.
After several meetings, the number of walls separating the rooms was gradually reduced, and the plan solidified into a 40-sq. m one-room apartment that can accommodate all aspects of life.
We also discussed materials, colors, and shapes during meetings, listening closely to the client's existing furniture, lighting, other possessions, lifestyle, and hobbies, and intend to incorporate as many of these elements as possible into the design of the house.
To make the most of the environment facing the woods, the two sides not facing the trees have no windows, leaving the south side fully open to ensure privacy.
By only opening onto the side facing the forest, the house is blessed with an environment where residents can spend their daily lives facing the changing weather, time, and seasons through the trees.
