One of the most interesting challenges Atelier036 encountered was the renovation of a very small space measuring only 17’ wide by 31’ long. We were able to transform the dark, cramped, divided space (see before photos) into an illuminated open space by removing two dividing walls, and adding large all glass ( 8’-0”wide ) doors to the rear façade, allowing an uninterrupted view and light into the depth of space. Having removed the dividing walls, we charged the perimeter walls with what we call space duality – or in more simple terms, a space that allows for flexible functions, such as a place to cook, meet a friend, have dinner, do homework, or just have a glass of wine.
Light and spaciousness were also enhanced by using white for the walls, white high gloss IKEA cabinets, and custom stained light wood flooring. The glass tiled wall surface helped to further energize and illuminate the space, as the tiles reflect both natural and artificial lighting. Another important design choice was avoiding upper cabinets, which creates the feeling of open space free of clutter. The newly created functional void—open free space with no specific function—connects both ends of the space and creates what appear to be larger and brighter rooms.
