Smack Mellon is a nonprofit arts organization that is critically and artistically acclaimed for its vision and contribution to under-recognized artists through providing exhibition opportunities, studio workspace and unlimited access to equipment and technical assistance. Founded in 1995, it has produced numerous exhibitions and has presented the work of hundreds of different artists as well as running multiple art programs designed to stimulate the public, local youths and emerging artists. The gallery is currently located in a converted boiler room that originally provided heat and power to the neighborhood buildings but then sat dormant for decades. A massive renovation was done in order to convert the raw industrial space into a 5,000 sq ft exhibition space, seven artists’ studios, shared workspace including a woodshop and state-of-the-art digital production lab and a kitchen/lounge area. New York Engineers provided mechanical engineering service to the gallery, completing the addition of a heating, cooling and ventilation system for the space.
