Project Description
Located in Sulaymaniyah, Iraq, Slemani Nwe is a dynamic general trading company. When tasked with designing their headquarters within the existing building, which also houses their warehouse, our team encountered a unique challenge: the building's structural limitations, characterized by one-meter-deep girders. We set out to transform these constraints into opportunities, culminating in a revolutionary design concept.
Our approach aimed to mitigate the visual impact of the girders' depth while maximizing functionality. We integrated smaller masses within the structure, breaking down scale and fostering intimacy within the expansive interior. This design strategy not only addressed the structural limitations but also imbued the space with a dynamic and multi-dimensional quality, offering a departure from traditional office environments.
Central to our vision for the company headquarters was the creation of a holistic workplace that transcends conventional boundaries. We envisioned a space that serves as a hub for productivity and a sanctuary for relaxation, contemplation, and social interaction. Additional functions such as prayer rooms, entertainment areas, and dining spaces were incorporated to foster community and belonging among employees, enhancing creativity and well-being.
Embracing organic design principles, we utilized smooth, curvilinear forms and filleted corners to soften the inherent rigidity of the structural elements. This design strategy enhanced the visual appeal of the space and contributed to a sense of fluidity and movement throughout. A harmonious palette of materials, including concrete, steel, and natural wood veneer, was carefully selected to imbue the interiors with warmth, depth, and texture. Custom-designed furniture further enriched the spatial experience, seamlessly integrating with the architectural language and enhancing coherence.
The design avoids total demolition by repurposing the existing structure and materials. The use of raw, unpainted finishes minimizes environmental impact, and the integration of natural elements promotes a healthy indoor environment. The aesthetics are driven by a blend of industrial and organic design principles. Exposed concrete elements highlight the building's industrial character, while natural wood and steel add warmth and texture.
