Proposal: “From Madrid to the sky”
“Due to its charm and cheerfulness, the city of Madrid has turned into a European myth”. Attributing these characteristics to a city means that it is a welcoming, free, calm and universal place. The vitality of Madrid’s inhabitants and of its visiting tourists, interested in discovering its perks, encourages its commercial offer to research for new and relaxing spaces. The capital’s weather allows dwellers to be outdoors most of the year, therefore, many citizens feel the need to find quiet spaces, where they can enjoy a break from their routine. The outdoor lounges of bars and restaurants are, without doubt, among the most acclaimed. This need for a space in which to enjoy Madrid’s vitality, has been the leading inspiration for the design of the sky lounge and terrace of the Hotel Indigo.
The creation of a green space, set in nature, within the Hotel Indigo, is the response to the propriety’s desire to develop a contemporary and welcoming space. The result is a garden that can be enjoyed all year around: the perfect scenery that allows breathing fresh air and contemplating Madrid’s famous skylines, including Gran Via’s. In order to make the most out of this symbiosis, we created a ‘lung’ within the urban habitat: a place from which Madrid can be contemplated from a different perspective.
The chosen colours for both spaces recall nature’s shades – greens and blues, giving this project, born as a response to the demand of spaces that allow spreading the mind, further personality.
Conceptual analysis of the chosen hotel area and project criteria
The idea of creating a particular garden in the terrace and an underwater world in the restaurant, guided the attainment of different spaces in each floor.
Due to the architectural features of the sky-lounge’s floor, characterised by spaces that were dark, soulless, and lacked in content, the first aim was to endow the space with its own personality, by using colour and light. The intrinsic potential of the space, which opens itself up to an infinity pool, shows through an underwater world, where even the sound of water is real. The blues and turquoises prevail in this space and introduce us to a world where textures and shapes mould the volumes of such ambitious project.
The use of wood for shelves and flooring conveys warmth to the ambience, which in turn embraces the client with its irregular and sinuous features. The flooring, in ceramic that imitates wood, recalls the sand of the beaches, where tables and stools are found, similar to golden treasures from sunken boats. The mirrors, spread over the ceilings and walls, emphasize the luminosity and reflection, amplifying the spatial perception. The tribute to de Gran Via, adjacent to the Hotel, is constant throughout the sky-lounge. In fact, on the two opposite horizontal planes, we developed a reproduction of the urban outline, which has been distributed through the ceiling. The views are the main characters of this space, where the infinity pool opens up to the city skyline of Plaza de España and Casa de Campo.
When leaving the pool, which gives continuity to the hotels context and site, we find the stairs that lead to the terrace above. In this floor, the main idea was to create an enchanted forest, where the natural elements are moulded in vinyl, creating a vertical garden, permanent and easy to maintain. This is a green space that maximises three focal areas: the entrance, the bar, and the views. Without competing with the city skyline, we designed a journey of gentle contrasts, ranging between the views of Madrid and the idea of nature.
Nothing is random and, in fact,, all the furniture elements of the terrace have been carefully designed. The project is shaped and its personality in enhanced by two rows of colourful seats, where one can chill whilst enjoying the breath-taking views; pillows that represent fruits and leaves; and chairs that recall tree brunches. Overall, this terrace is the perfect setting to accompany Madrid’s sightseeing.
