SKP Chengdu is a first for luxury mixed-use masterplanning and has immediately become a landmark and the first blueprint of its kind for fashion, technology, and art, and a new milestone for the city. A holistic and collaborative project by Sybarite, realised with Field Operations, ECADI, Arup, Speirs Major, Buro Happold, Eckersley O’Callaghan, and The Fountain Workshop.
At SKP Chengdu, nature, SKP (contemporary luxury) and SKP-S (next generation luxury) come together to conjure an undeniable sense of interconnectedness: an ingenious combination of urban park and underground buildings, with SKP & SKP-S bookending the site connected by avenues of hospitality, experience, and lifestyle.
The project was three years in the making, throughout the pandemic, and masterminded from the micro to the macro by Sybarite as architectural partners to SKP. SKP Chengdu boasts a colossal half a million square metres of mixed-use retail and hospitality, representative of the ongoing commitment to scale and growth that has been at the core of SKP’s ten-year journey with Sybarite.
As with all Sybarite projects, locality plays an empathetic role in their design ethos and acts as a foundational starting point. SKP Chengdu evolves the architectural design codes and brand marque that were conceived a decade ago: the logo itself containing all the geometries that are used to create the bespoke SKP House Style which is signalled by what is coined as ‘The SKP Curve’.
The customer journey is well curated. Under the theme of Parallel World, customers will enjoy the connection of park and plunging architecture, bookended SKP and SKP-S connected by retail and hospitality avenues, and SKP-S itself as experience-led hypothetical utopian world. Nature, retail, lifestyle, hospitality, and art are constantly in motion, evolving and changing in SKP Chengdu in celebration of rich experiences.
Working with SKP and Sybarite, Field Operations designed a landscape for SKP Chengdu that integrates retail with nature while celebrating Chengdu’s diverse cultural background and varied landscapes. Imagined as a new, forward-thinking retail experience, the park links sunken retail architecture with an above-grade exterior public realm. The park itself takes on the SKP branded curve and design codes. By entering the luxury department stores through these lush and diverse gardens and exterior public spaces, SKP Park Chengdu offers an experience that distinctly contrasts with any existing retail villages, putting nature at the forefront.
