SKIN PEEP
Chris Briffa
Architects relocate their studio to St James Cavalier.
To commemorate five years since its founding, local firm
Chris Briffa Architects have set up a voyeuristic installation in the main hall
of St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity in Valletta.
For a whole month, the young architects will be working inside a perforated
concrete skin, which allows visitors
to peep into their world.
?The idea of living and working in an art museum, under the
gaze of strangers, might be regarded as exhibitionist behaviour,? says the
35-year-old architect, ?but we tend to look at it as experimental motivation.?
The contemporary structure impressively occupies a 450-year-old vault inside
the cavalier, and invites visitors to walk around it to unfold a series of
views, some live and others recorded, of the architects at work.
The low-tech construction, built in standard concrete
bricks, conjures images of various architectural projects; during their design,
construction and finished stages. After
3 months of preparation, the perimeter walls were laid in 3 days by an
incredulous team of builders and later fitted with lighting, computers, desks
and drawing boards plus a number of architects? paraphernalia like scale
models, books and magazines.
?The bricks will all be recycled back into the industry?,
continues Briffa, ?(and) the concealed timber supporting them is recycled
formwork from one of our sites.? Asked about what they want to achieve from
such a logistical nightmare, Briffa replied; ?It will probably be a bit like
working in a site office, only that here we are not the ones watching but the
ones being watched. We hope that SKIN PEEP inspires young talent and the general public
towards contemporary architecture.?
