In the wake of growing urbanization, we are confronted by the accelerated erosion of communities in our cities. Urbanization transformed the nature of social ties as the frequency of encounters decreased and the nodes of our social networks dispersed. This process made parents raising their children alone more vulnerable which was only amplified by the pandemic. With the widespread introduction of remote work into domestic spaces, young families struggled to stay afloat. As a reaction to the disintegration of urban social networks, a renaissance of spaces for community engagement was born. The Single Parents’ Community Center in Buda designed by Archikon Architects exemplifies this momentum of innovation. There is no one-size-fits-all model for supporting single parents. Instead, the role of the designer here is to offer varied spatial opportunities for different modes and techniques of social engagement. This community center is located in a former bank branch in the 12th district in Buda, and the envisioning of the future of this space involved a radical refurbishment of its interiors. Through this transformation, the open space acquired a sophisticated yet welcoming quality. Parents and their children are greeted by a pleasant atmosphere lent to the space by the illumination of the interiors through the large street front windows. The main feature of the communal space is the undulating built-in furniture system along which the café, reception, a spatial division curtain, and storage spaces are located respectively, and which is embellished by refined interior design details. Part of the community center is a play-space which can be approached through a separate entrance. This playroom is reminiscent of the nearby Budapest Déli Station, since the games designed for the room were created with a transportation theme in mind. Visitors of the center are greeted by a playful, but warm and welcoming color palette, where light greens and dark reds complement the otherwise natural materiality of the space. The unique light fixtures not only create a distinct atmosphere, but their composition also reflects the mission of the institution, where each family can receive individual and specialized rehabilitation and support. The soundproof spatial division curtain grants a flexible quality to the space, allowing for the room to be divided into smaller, more private sections, as different programs and modes of engagement have different requirements. The design concept for the Single Parents’ Community Center is built around the dichotomy of intimacy and openness created by the variability and the sequencing of the spaces. The versatile characterization of the space as simultaneously catering for intimate and more public modes of engagement between young single parents in the local community is a step towards combatting the alienation that is often experienced in our cities.
