Music indoor
and outdoor, in the trees of the park and among the lives of the city.
Groundswell.
Sound
emanates from the landscape, from the people of Poland.
Old sounds
echo from the past while new ones beckon the future.
Interference…of
sounds, of culture.
These different
waves combine to amplify each other.
IN THIS POETIC SPIRIT, THE NEW HALL
COMPLEX AVOIDS ATTEMPTS TO DOMINATE, BELITTLE OR CONCEAL THE EXISTING
BUILDINGS, WHOSE HISTORICAL LONGEVITY IN A CITY
LEVELED DURING WORLD WAR II AFFORDS A UNIQUE PROMINENCE IN THE SOUL OF
WARSAW. BY SINKING THE HALL INTO THE
LANDSCAPE, THE REQUIRED HEIGHT ABOVE THE STAGE IS CREATED WITHOUT YIELDING A
TOWERING STRUCTURE WHOSE MASSING IS NOT IN KEEPING WITH THE ORIGNAL BUILDINGS’
SCALE. AT THE SAME TIME, THE NEW CONCERT
HALL ESTABLISHES A STRONG IDENTITY OF ITS OWN BY GRAFTING ITSELF INTO THE LAND AND BY EXTENDING AN OPEN HAND
TO ITS IMMEDIATE CONTEXT.
TWO MAJOR EPICENTERS ARE CONCEIVED: THE NEW HALL AND
THE EXISTING CENTERPIECE
BUILDING OF THE EXISTING
VETERINARY COMPLEX. IN A PROCESS VAGUELY
REMINISCENT OF TRADITIONAL PAPER CRAFT, THE LANDSCAPE IS CUT AND FOLDED TO ANIMATE THE SYNCHRONIZED SOUNDS OF WARSAW. DISCONTINUOUS RADIAL LINES SPRING FROM THE
TWO MAJOR CENTERS, BRINGING ABOUT INTERFERENCE AND
CONVERGENCE OF FORM AND PEOPLE IN
A GRAND FOYER. THIS SINUOUS PUBLIC SPACE
FORMS TWO PANORAMIC RINGS - AN INTERIOR ONE
ENFOLDING THE HALL TO THE NORTH AND
AN EXTERIOR ONE FORGING A NEW
AMPHITHEATER - BOOK-ENDED BY BUILDING A - TO THE SOUTH. THESE INTERWOVEN RINGS UNITE THE FIVE
EXISTING BUILDINGS TOGETHER IN A COHERENT FASHION THAT SEEKS NOT TO USURP THE
EXTANT SYMMETRY; RATHER, TO STRENGTHEN IT.
REGARDING CONTEXTUAL RESPONSE, THE NEW
BUILDING FRONTAGE ALONG TERESPOLSKA PROVIDES AN ACTIVE URBAN CONNECTION ALONG THIS IMPORTANT THOROUGHFARE, WHILE AN
EDGE NOW FREE OF BARRIERS ALONG PARK OBWODU PRAGA TO THE EAST ENCOURAGES
OPENNESS TO THIS CELEBRATED GREEN SPACE AND
LINKS THE PARK TO THE NEW AMPHITHEATER.
THE
NEW CONCERT HALL COMBINES IMAGINATIVE FORM AND
MATERIALS TO CREATE ACOUSTIC INTIMACY, CLARITY AND
WARMTH AND WILL BECOME A BELOVED
HALL FOR SINFONIA VARSOVIA FOR YEARS TO
COME.Competition Brief:The Competition task consists in developing an architectural and urban
concept of the development of the area of former Veterinary Institute
complex located at 27 Grochowska 272 in Warsaw for the purpose of the
seat of Orkiestra Sinfonia Varsovia. The task includes in particular
the preparing of conceptual architectural designs of the adaptation of
the existing listed buildings as well as designing the main city
