The SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute, with funding from tobacco lawsuit monies, is a leading facility for cancer treatment, education and research for Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. The building uses multidisciplinary clinic modules – uniting the best treatment and education options in one setting designed to minimize movement of cancer patients. The design focuses on patient comfort to foster a sense of hope. The curvilinear, three-story building becomes the icon building of the SIU Springfield campus. Its welcoming exterior includes an entry canopy that creates a gateway. Materials complement the existing campus buildings, and forms suggest protection and nurturing. Light that floods the interior from a glass spine and multi-storied lobbies all add to the feeling of hope.
