Located in the community of Silverado-on-the-Brazos, the Silverado Residence is a second home for a young couple who enjoy "cutting", a sport involving specially trained horses and herds of cattle. For their new residence, we were inspired by a work by artist Andy Goldsworthy, and his work where a series of fractured rocks are arranged in a spiral. The Silverado Residence is organized around three black slate-clad "rocks", which are smooth on the exterior and fractured on the interior facing the circulation halls of the home. the fractures create ledges for artwork to rest upon, and lower, benches to sit upon. The program housed within the three "rocks" are the Master Bedroom Suite, the Kitchen, and the Guest Suite. The remainder of the house is an open plan with dramatic views across seventeen acres of horse country, an expanse of spectacular flowering grasslands as far as the eye can see. Hovering over the open plan is a massive, standing seam zinc roof that appears to float weightlessly above the floor below.
