The renovation of this disjointed 1980’s residence transformed the dated original house with angled walls, small windows, and sunken floors into an open and inviting space with a strong connection to the outdoors. The clients loved the house for it’s location and secluded natural setting, but wanted a home that reflected their family-oriented, casual yet sophisticated lifestyle. The disconnected rooms of the original house were opened up and re-oriented to create a more functional floor plan with abundant natural light.
The living area is characterized by clean, modern lines composed of natural materials including raw steel detailing, shou sugi ban paneling at the kitchen cabinets and bar, plaster fireplace surround, and walnut floors. The layered material palette brings warmth and texture to the space. The large kitchen and central island with a sinker cypress top form the nucleus of the home: a place where the newly blended family of six can gather as one.
The exterior of the house was simplified in form and material. Extensive landscaping, pool resurfacing, a new porch with retractable screens, outdoor kitchen, and fire pit allow family life to spill into the beautiful back yard. Large limestone pavers were hand cut and dry stacked, mediating both the steep elevational changes from the interior to pool level, and the transition from the modern aesthetic of the interior and building skin to the rugged natural landscape of the adjacent creek bed. Native plantings blend seamlessly into the site.
