On one of the most central locations in Antwerp, at the very centre of its historical core, rises a new museum. To combine the Silver Museum and the Diamond Museum on this site displays a new start for two partners who aspire to conquer, once again, their rightful place in a worsening climate for cultural support. This new exhibition complex can, however, occupy a very worthy place in the modern urban art world since it offers its large audience both the historical and contemporary economical value of art, decoration and craftmanship’s objects, makes it visible and places it in its proper social perspective.
The project definition is very ambitious, making the proposed design maximise the potency of the powerful spaces as diligently as the valuable collection requires. The project therefore weaves a remarkable respect for the existing heritage with tremendous deployable flexibility with an evident functioning, a clear routing and even a trendy pop-up phasing as its principal strongholds. Conversely, the visitors’ centre, auditorium, café and the inner courtyard are suited to a broader use than strictly ‘museum’. By prominently focusing these program components as clustered entity towards one of the oldest and most visited streets of Antwerp, we aim for a ‘place-to-be’ for various events which may or may not necessarily have a link with the Silver and Diamond Museum.
