The Shree Swaminaryan Mandir is the manifestation of a vision the north London Hindu community nurtured for 25 years. The fascinating project combines traditional religious architecture and contemporary design; centuries-old craftsmanship with modern construction techniques. Comprising a new Temple, Multi-Function Hall, workspaces and public courtyard, the campus has a rich mix of uses; worship and contemplation, through to celebration, sports, work and relaxation.
The Temple building contains a prayer hall for 750 worshippers, support spaces and further sacred spaces for use during visits by the head of the religious order. The buildings traditional appearance was delivered using innovative construction techniques; a highly insulated concrete structure clad in precast concrete panels and decorative mouldings formed in glass reinforced concrete.
A landscaped courtyard between the Temple and Hall provides a sheltered public space for community events and festivals. In knitting together the campus and welcoming all visitors the courtyard is considered second only to the prayer hall in its' significance.
The Multi-Function Hall's restrained geometric form and contemporary material palette creates a strong counterpoint to the ornate detail of its neighbour. The building is highly flexible, able to host events as diverse as marriage ceremonies, celebrations and sports. The interior design of the hall responds to this breadth of use with acoustic panels providing the requisite level of robustness as well as finish.
Having achieved a BREEAM Excellent Rating the building is seen as the world's first 'eco-temple'. A combined heat and power plant serves the complex and forms the basis of a highly efficient energy strategy, encompassing renewable technologies and natural ventilation.
A week-long celebration marked the building completion, culminating in a community parade of thousands arriving at the Temple. The campus has become the religious and social heart of the community, successfully representing their rich tradition and forward thinking ambition.
