Due to the presence of an already existing high river dike, Shopping Centre Carnisse Veste is situated at a unique location. This incidental circumstance has been utilized by situating the shops on a terp in the current polder. The visitors’ garage, the occupants’ garage, the provisioning of the centre and two large supermarkets have been incorporated in the terp.
The available difference in height has been used optimally. The large supermarkets are accessible at grade from the parking facilities. In the middle of the visitors’ garage, there is a raising point with escalators and elevators, which has been developed as openly and transparently as possible. Daylight enters into the garage through this raising point. In the greenly decorated cover, we have allowed for large open spaces. Trees have been planted between the various parking sites. The crowns of these trees camouflage the cars and function as a green screen on the level of the cover.
Alongside the access road, we have placed gabions with a carefully selected filling of natural stone blocks. The required ventilation is provided via these gabions. Moreover, filtered daylight can penetrate through the openings between the stone blocks. On other places, the terp’s talus will block the view of the parked cars.
