This residence has a unique history within the Lake Forest community. It was originally buit in 1859 on a different lot, but sometime in the late 1800's the structure was relocated and doubled in size by Samuel Barnum. Since then the home has undergone several changes that did not keep with its original character. Nevertheless, being one of the oldest home's in Lake Forest, it was granted landmark status. The home's atypical layout and alterations required careful research in order to make an authentic restoration possible. We started by replacing the enclosed mid-century porch addition with a more historically appropriate wrap-around porch that engages the street and welcomes guests. All of the existing exterior detailing was restored and copied on this addition to ensure historical continuity. We updated the home to accommodate a more contemporary lifestyle with an attached 3-car garage, walk-out patio from the kitchen addition, and an entirely new second floor layout. Much care was given to how the garage engaged the home without overpowering it or effecting the view of neighbors. By sinking the garage to basement level, its roof becomes the patio off of the new kitchen addition.
