As the economy in China improved, demand for better healthcare facilities increased, resulting in a wave of new hospital construction. Located in the province of Shenzhen, China, Shenzhen Third People’s Infectious Disease Hospital is a specialty hospital, which includes 500 inpatient beds, outpatient clinics serving 2,000 patients per day, research labs, and staff residences.
TRO Jung|Brannen designed this project in collaboration with AHS International Architectural Design Consulting, and Shenzhen Architectural Design Research Institute.
The design synthesizes site conditions and program requirements to find the optimal balance of traditional Chinese forms and Western technology. The campus contains a linear spine with a series of north-south finger-shaped buildings curving to capture sunlight and channel the prevailing southeastern winds.
Although the buildings have internal mechanical systems to halt the spread of infections, similar to those in U.S. hospitals, campus organization remains consistent with culturally understood arrangements of locating infectious patients downwind. This arrangement offers them the natural healing power of sunlight and serene garden views.
