Nestled amidst the rolling mountains of a renowned seaside resort in southern China, two staggered circular towers rise quietly from a white podium. Their wave-like facades, bathed in the glow of the setting sun, exude an intense romanticism, perfectly embodying the harmonious integration of architecture, forest, and seaa veritable Shangri-La. This elegant landmark serves as a comprehensive hospital specializing in rehabilitation medicine, providing 6,000 outpatient and emergency visits daily and 2,000 inpatient beds. The taller circular building comprises four interconnected inpatient units on each floor, providing all wards with immersive views of the surrounding mountains and the sea. The lower tower houses research, teaching, and administrative functions, where the circle configuration enhances interdepartmental connectivity and collaboration. The design innovatively creates three polysemous courtyard spaces that penetrate the entire hospital. These spaces serve as traffic nodes and spatial coordinates, facilitating people's navigation within the hospital. They also provide ample natural light and ventilation, which are crucial in hospitals in hot, humid climates. Furthermore, they connect the building with nature, creating a natural healing environment and diverse spaces for rest and interaction. The central courtyard, called the Hub Courtyard, primarily serves outpatient facilities and features a circular oculus reminiscent of the Pantheon, producing rich variations in light and shadow as the sun moves across the sky. Flanking it, the Life Courtyard and the Exchange Courtyard, each nearly 100 meters in diameter, are defined by the circular towers. The Life Courtyard introduces trellis bridges and tree-like sculptures to enrich therapeutic experiences. The Exchange Courtyard features a spherical lecture hall with a shingled-glass faade that refracts daylight, creating a vibrant academic atmosphere. The abundant courtyard spaces seamlessly integrate architecture and nature into a symbiotic realm where mountain and sea, sunlight and forest, humans and nature coexist in harmony.
