Pushkinskii theater has been one of the most important urban icons in Moscow history. At the same time the park in front of the theater is frequently regarded as one of the busiest meeting points in Moscow society.
Problem / Main issue
There are a series of missed opportunities due to current conditions:
- disconnection between the park and the theater
- south facing glass facade heats the interior depriving the comfortable use of space
- loss of identity; sense of belonging between theater and surroundings ceased to exist due to dense advertisement acting as the face of the theater
Objective
The main purpose is the revitalization of two important urban icons /spaces by blurring their limits in order to enhance the connection between them
Strategy
To introduce an element embedded into the collective memory of Russian culture into the facade to reinvigorate its status
The reinterpretation of Orenburg shawl into an interactive pattern gives the facade it's permeability extending the park onto the theater's platform
The new facade minimizes the direct sun exposure, still providing enough diffused light for enclosed space. The use of DuPont Corian allows for structure as well as mild translucency.
