The main design approach in this project is to rebuild it with minimal changes to the status quo, while still giving meaning to its space. It can be argued that space and location are intertwined in an architectural building, and their relation becomes apparent in comparing these two categories and examining their qualities. The part of space that stays in our minds and sometimes becomes a collective memory is called location in philosophy and theory of space.
Understanding the process of converting space into location through the inner hierarchy of this sense is, therefore, necessary to address this issue gradually in man on the basis of his level of communication with the environment, including sense of place, place identity and manifestation of belonging to place. Paying attention to the quality of space created after reconstruction is one of the most important goals of this project.
In this regard it is important to discuss this issue regarding the understanding of the process of transforming space into location and the internal hierarchy of gradually forming this feeling in a human based on the level of his connection to the environment. This sense of connection includes the sense of location the identity of location and its manifestation as a sense of belonging to the location. Focusing on the created spatial quality after rebuilding is one of the most important goals of this project.
The changes in placements and the optimization of spaces with regards to increasing the memorability value and its pleasantness significantly helps the transformation of space into location.
One of the influential factors in the spatial organization of the Sharifi villa is the attention to scale and spatial proportions, visual and motor communication between the different areas of the building. These changes are considered based on the following categories:
1. Moving, eliminating and adding spaces and increasing the range of the plan according to the needs of the employer.
2. Adding space shaping elements, such as giving shapes to sloped roofs and implementing canopies.
3. Creation and modification of open and semi-open spaces in the form of terraces.
4. Creating, changing and modifying vertical communications. Adding Elevator to the building and alteration to the detail of connecting staircase between the ground floor and the first floor, in order to open the space.
The development of the early plans of the villa helps create a tangible relationship between the open and the closed space. For this purpose, revitalizing the exterior space of the kitchen, as well as utilizing the roof above the locker room, makes the interior and exterior spaces more connected and allows users to have a new spatial experience.
The implementation of canopies to the western section, aside from eliminating unwanted light, has created a space that forms light and shade in different hours of the day and provides a visual variety.
Considering the economic limitations of the employer and to finish the rebuilding in the shortest time and at the most optimal cost, was another objective of the project.
In order to create a sense of place and identity in visual spaces, brick was chosen as a memorable material for the project. In this regard, with a modernized look to traditional brickwork such as Fakhr and Modayan Chaharband arrangement, a modern detail of these arrangements was designed.
In the interior space by changing the texture and the color of the bricks, using the flame technique, a new and unique material was created, which resulted in the increase of the spatial quality of the environment.
As mentioned above, the mission of architecture is, as much as possible, to transform a space into a location, or in other words, to reveal the potential meanings that exists in an environment. One should keep in mind that creating a location without creating a sense of belonging, is meaningless. It is feeling that stems from a person's relationship with the environment and is built on his values and beliefs, deepens and develops over time.
