The project relocated the Sanger Institute Reception, upgraded the Library, increased the use of the DiNA cafe and greatly improved environmental comfort issues such as solar gain and acoustics.
A concept was developed using ‘Twisted boxes’ set within a transparent envelope to celebrate key views whilst offering a variety of spatial experiences. The balconies allow the users to engage with the views at upper level as well as the public areas at ground floor level. The orientation of the boxes defines the movement of users and offers clear way finding through a variety of vistas.
A projecting green glass lantern placed along the rear wall of the space acts as a marker for the entrance to the new library, allowing a visual link to the garden beyond.
