The architecture layout of this site is 2 buildings face to face by 8 meter street, which is generally seen at Taiwanese Urban Context. This kind of urban building layout will not only loses the relaxing element of the living nature, but also lack of human privacy in this dense urban environment. Therefore, we have always aggressively tried to find a “Comfort Zone” by insert an immediate interface with exterior design and balconies, people can finally comfortably using balconies and also felt private with living at the same time. We believe by doing so, housing balconies can finally really used and rest by people, and the Taiwan Urban Context will no longer filled with addition exterior walls and balcony metal fences.
The Site is at PingTung County in Taiwan which has a close imagination related to the ocean; the intention of this project is to represent the special texture of Coral Reef through architectural languages and the dazzling sun lights of the southern part of Taiwan. The inner and outer spaces between the exterior grills and balconies creates a sense of the holes of the coral reef, which forms a “comfort zone” interface for people to travel in and out the intermediate spaces and also stayed at the specific area. The L shape balcony and exterior grills not only have multiple layers of the building façade to present the Coral Reef but also give the vivid visual and spacial texture of Coral Reef by various lights, shadows, and shades through time. The residences here will feel like fish shuttling in the reef grills while walking on the L shape balcony and they provides better living quality by furnishing privacy for this community where the units facing to one another along the street. The gradient mosaic over the building massing provides the floating background of in-between; the lower portion of the building massing dives into the ground, and the upper portion connects to the blue sunny sky of the PingTung horizon, and relatively these balcony grills look like stand in between the sky, the ocean and its ground.
