Hainan Hospital of Ruijin Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (Phase I) is a national regional medical center integrating medical treatment, scientific research, education, prevention, health care and rehabilitation. The Project is located in Bo’ao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone, Qionghai City. As the only special medical zone in China, the pilot zone enjoys favorable state policies for pilot demonstration of Hainan’s medical and health services, making this Project, which is naturally endowed with innovative genes, an important gateway for the most advanced innovative medicines and medical devices in the world to access the Chinese market. The Project aims to develop a national clinical center for medical innovation and a national medical research center of advanced technology, so that innovative devices, instruments and drugs from abroad can benefit people at home on an earlier and better basis. In addition, it also aims to become a national real-world data research center to collect clinical data from various medical institutions, and in this way, contribute to the development of medical treatment and scientific research.
The Project, with a GFA of 90,269 square meters, is planned with a total of 500 hospital beds. Giving full play to both favorable geoclimatic environment and state policies, and integrating rehabilitation with leisure functions in design, the Hospital is evolving into a venue nurturing the art of life and the humanistic spirit, and the most distinctive medical service destination in China.
Harmony with site and nature
Located near the Wanquan River and embraced in a forest park with exuberant green trees, the site, as an important node in Bo’ao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone, enjoys unique, superior natural conditions, attractive views and tranquil environment. For this project, the buildings are designed in a finger-like form that is open on all four sides, maximizing the natural landscape around while organically integrating into the large ecosystem of the Wanquan River, and at the same time, creating “opposite sceneries” that complement with nature.
The ground floor is elevated in large areas, creating unique “arcade” spaces that are adaptive to Hainan’s tropical marine climate. Green plants, fresh air and gentle breeze circulate freely through the elevated floor and permeate into sky terraces on F2, realizing a harmonious and holistic design. This not only reflects the wisdom of ecology, but also creates a vibrant microcirculation system. In this way, the spatial environment is quietly improved, enabling harmonious interaction between nature and architecture.
Artistic healing in a seaside setting
The building’s exterior highlights the dynamic aesthetics of continuous flow, with curvy lines on the façade creating shifting light and shadows throughout the day. Inside, large windows and an open layout design ensure ample daylight and allow beautiful external views to be visible from every corner. This approach creates a vibrant and dynamic environment, providing a more enriching and healing spatial experience for visitors and patients.
The entrance to the visitor center, shaped like a flying saucer, is situated between the Phase I and II buildings. The interior design, inspired by the concept of the Life Tree, creates a spiritual space that symbolizes the vitality of life, offering a mentally soothing environment for patients. Besides, the visitor center features various urban amenities, including a café, a book bar, and dining options. Patients entering the hospital can enjoy a spacious area with ample sunlight and diverse services. In doing so, the traditional hospital atmosphere is replaced by a more everyday setting, helping to alleviate the stress and anxiety associated with medical treatment.
“1+X” multi-center modal for medical research commercialization
As the first research-oriented hospital on Hainan Free Trade Island, this project integrates scientific research, education, and clinical practice as essential components. It features an innovative “1+X” multi-center model, reorganizing medical functions with a shared medical center at the core, surrounded by various functional units arranged in a radial pattern. These include the inpatient complex, real-world data research center, medical information center, tropical disease research center, and BOH service center. The design effectively integrates these functional elements and achieves seamless connectivity through a convenient shared activity platform, creating a continuous and cohesive shared space system.
By effectively integrating various functional elements and ensuring seamless connectivity through a convenient shared activity platform, the design establishes a continuous shared space system. This approach not only enhances interaction between centers but also significantly improves the efficiency of clinical research commercialization, thereby providing a strong foundation for advancing medical innovation and service quality.
