Confluence was commissioned to design, fabricate and install a fully custom sewing room in a mid-century modern home. Confluence tailored the design to the client’s needs, a lovelyseamstress who works from her wheelchair, resulting in a highly functional and fully accessible space. The primary work surface is a thickened countertop, cantilevered from the wall, allowing the two sewing machines to be recessed flush with the solid surface. An upholstered bench with built-in drawers houses textiles. In the center of the room is a dual layer table with a lower surface that pivots 360 degrees on a caster. The table provides an ironing surface on top and a cutting surface below that can be repositioned allowing the client to reconfigure the space as she works throughout the room. It’s also really freakin’ cool.
