SERENE HOUSE
Wang Muang, Saraburi, Thailand
Located in Wang Muang, Saraburi, this 380-square-metre residence occupies a former school parking area beside the owners’ long-established family business. After years of living in a row house adjacent to the site, the owners envisioned a home that could provide privacy, calm, and a closer connection to nature while remaining modestly integrated within its familiar community setting.
The house responds to Saraburi’s limestone landscape and tropical climate through a design that prioritizes daylight, ventilation, and environmental performance. An L-shaped plan is carefully oriented to optimize solar control and thermal comfort. Soft northern light illuminates the primary living spaces, while landscape buffers, water elements, and full-height glazing strengthen the relationship between interior and exterior environments.
The spatial concept draws from Le Corbusier’s notion of the house as a machine for living, translated into a modular structural system that organizes space, climate, and everyday routines. A sequence of interconnected living areas, terraces, and gardens establishes a fluid spatial experience while accommodating the practical needs of contemporary family life.
Architecturally, the house balances restraint with a distinct formal identity. A series of mono-pitched roofs frame daylight, admit controlled southern light, and create varied sectional relationships throughout the interior. Concealed drainage reinforces the perception of a monolithic concrete form despite its hybrid steel-and-concrete structure. Locally sourced Saraburi limestone anchors the project within its landscape, creating an architecture that is both regionally grounded and quietly contemporary.
