An Experimental Teaching Building at a local Community College As part of the on-going effort to expand its teaching methods, the College is building an experimental "ultra green" building with planning, design and construction input by the students. The building will include a combination of low-tech and high-tech green strategies to build, condition and illuminate the facility. All systems will be left exposed to allow the building to be used as a teaching space.
The fundamental belief guiding the design of the building is that, while sustainability addresses the needs and workings of the environment here on earth, the building must also acknowledge the universe beyond our world. Since aspects of sustainability and the environment are constantly changing, the building needed to address something constant beyond the boundaries of the earth. The form of the building aligns with the only "fixed" point in the sky - the North Star. In the same sense as an Egyptian Serdab allows the statue within to view the heavens, this teaching space is a constant reminder of the universe of which our world is only a small part...
