Sequoia High School is a
historic campus listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It needed a spectacular new gymnasium which
could seat all of its 1,400 students. The school district required that the new
building meet the highest standards for energy consumption and sustainability.
CAW created a flexible
facility that can now be used by the entire student body, and whose
contemporary architectural language complimented the historic campus. It also
achieved the school dDistrict’s
goal of LEED Gold by integrating multiple state-of-the-art sustainable design
features. Orientation and placement of the building also provided the added
benefits of organizing the parking and drop-off areas, and creating dynamic new
campus and stadium entrances.
How CAW achieved this
- Leveraging the site’s location at the edge of a parking lot,
CAW was able to create a welcoming entrance plaza for students to gather.
- The walls of the building
were designed to form a new entrance to the football stadium, and to link the
stadium with the new entry plaza and gymnasium entrance.
- A large roof monitor with vertical clearstory windows allows
diffuse light to filter into the gym with no glare on the courts, and reduces
daytime lighting needs by more than 70%.
- Rooftop photovoltaic
systems generate 53% of the building’s
estimated peak energy consumption.
- The architects incorporated
sustainable materials and efficient mechanical systems to help achieve the district’s
goal of LEED Gold.
