The goal of this project was to design a wall to extend the sensory realm of the body into space / material at room scale. One psychological / behavioral characteristic from the client’s profile stood out in particular: he was claustrophobic. The wall was to act as a mechanism to alleviate the client’s fear of confined spaces. It was decided that the occupant would be given the power to mediate his condition by operating the wall to create more space in the room. Conversely, the occupant in the adjacent room would similarly possess the same power to control the wall. Therefore, the overall form of the wall would require a negotiation between both parties, with the wall acting as a true mediator.
