An ultra modern passive solar house on a lifestyle block on the outskirts of Christchurch. This house was completed shortly before the big quake in September and although it was very close to the epicentre it was completely undamaged. The house is designed to capture and store the suns energy. It is super insulated and includes thermal break details to eliminate heat transfer. There are several internal block walls that provide the thermal mass. This combined with a thick polished concrete floor that is heated with water makes the house very cosy with minimal heat input. The floor is isolated from the exterior foundation and has a grid of decorative timber inserts throughout to avoid any cracking. It looks stunning and feels warm even with the heating turned off. A sheltered courtyard provides protection from the wind and separates the bedroom wing from the rest of the house.
A ducted heat recovery ventilation system concealed in bulkheads running through the house has been seemlessly incorporated into the design. Windows have Low E argon gas filled glazing and some have thermally broken frames. Over heating is eliminated by shading from very large roof overhangs.
Bob Burnett Architecture were closely involved from start to finish and took care of all design including the interior joinery, kitchen and bathrooms.
