SELF SUFFICIENT CITY - Greentransplant
Firm
“Green transplant” draws the
main lines of a new urban approach applying an ecological layer on the actual
city. It points up a series of strategy rather than a way of making
architecture, according to the fact that sustainable building considers the city’s
parameters.
1.REBUILDING THE SUSTAINABLE CITY ON THE CITY
Project philosophy:
It’s in the current city, big
consumers, that the actual issue takes place; where the energetic challenges
turnout to be the most urgent; but also where the new interventions must be the
most tactful.
- Build the ecological city in
a respect of the current urban heritage and historical layer in opposition to a
« tabula rasa» politic.
- Integrate a respectful
architecture of the context, in its scale, its construction techniques and its
urban morphology.
- Curb the city increasing
density to reduce the ecological footprint and control the urban sprawl.
Project courses of action:
- Appropriation of the current distribution
network for the new energy’s and material’s injection.
- Appropriation of the current public
transport network:- Underground railway
stations become deep geothermal stations à heat network.
- Tramway network à ecosystem network.
- Bus network à antipollution network.
2.POSITIF MESHING
Project philosophy:
To restore the energetic
balance, the overconsumming actual city needs overproducing interventions.
- Get away from the existent
network to apply a positive energy meshing to the city.
- Tend towards a city with
energetic self-sufficiency by the integration of radiant solutions.
-Avoid toppling over in a self-sustaining system. Advocate a
sustainable city by staying clear from a self-sufficiency at every level and by
putting the emphasis on exchange (cultural, economic, social,…) and communication.
- Positive purification of the
city.
Project courses of action:
Impact point: vertical and static strategy à Production function à Resulted by the implantation of new built
elements.
Network: horizontal and dynamic strategy à Input and output function à Resulted by the appropriation of the public
transport network.
Both of the agents contribute to purify the
city.
3.SLIDE BACK THE CURRENT CYCLES
Project philosophy:
Each new intervention acts as
a missing link in cities where pre-established cycles don’t close up.
- Tend towards a cyclic
evolution of the market by giving value to waste as direct source of energy and
material.
- Optimize different type of
recycling by gathering them together in order that someone’s waste becomes some
other’s raw material.
Project courses of action:
CO2 cycle and other aerial pollutant:
absorption and purification by titanium oxide and vegetation.
Wastewater cycle:
- Drinking water by
phyto-purification
- Gas by methanisation
Organic waste cycle :
- Gas by methanisation
- Compost by methanisation
Paper waste cycle :
- Gas by methanisation
- Paper by recycling
4.BIOCLIMATIC CONSTRUCTIVE PRINCIPLE
Project philosophy:
Sustainable architecture can
not be reduced to a replica exportable anywhere.
- Integrate architecture in
the context and make the project interacting with his environment through the
place, the form, the materials and the energies necessary to the constructing
and working process.
- Avoid an architectural
reflection only based on the accumulation of new technologies, but promote come
back to bioclimatic architectural principles.
Project courses of action:
- Facade = double skin: catches, stocks,
converts, transforms, regulates, and throws out the materials and energies.
- Architecture = living organism interact with
his environment. Natural parameters generate energy production and help going
over less consumption.
- Vegetation = raw material various indigenous
vegetation, appropriated to local conditions à help recreating the ecosystem.

In order to change the
ecological situation, it is necessary to change our consumption habits.
- Adopt an awareness-raising
and consciousness-raising politic of the different ways of consumption and
production, with a view to tend towards a systemic change of mentality through
new habits.
- Take advantage of the city
planning and the public domain in order to communicate new values to citizens
at the same time as m inimizing the different intervention’s impacts on the
city.

- Pedagogic character by the visibility of the
interventions in the city.
- Information and communication relay.
- Public transport network optimization à incitement to his use.
- Encouragement of recycling materials because
the recycling process becomes an energy source.
