The Sekhukhune Smart Library is an innovative pre-concept design by A4AC Architects , intended to serve as a contemporary educational hub. The design is deeply rooted in the traditional Bapedi and broader Sotho culture of the region.
Concept and Cultural Inspiration
The core of the design is the kgoro. In traditional Bapedi and Sotho settlement patterns, the dikgoro were clusters where family homesteads meet. This central hub was vital for sharing knowledge, resolving disputes, and strengthening community bonds.
The library's design carries this tradition forward:
The Contemporary Kgoro: The library features a circular, shaded courtyard at its center, which functions as the social and cultural heart. It is envisioned as an open-air garden and amphitheater for public gatherings, storytelling, performances, and informal learning.
Spatial Gradient: Rings of spaces radiate outward from this heart , transitioning from lively, public zones into quieter study and research areas. This arrangement mirrors the social gradient of historic settlements.
Architectural Expression
The exterior façade is adorned with a vibrant, geometric pattern inspired by Ditema tsa Dinoko.
Ditema tsa Dinoko: This is a contemporary writing system based on the geometric wall paintings and incised patterns (ditema/litema) that traditionally decorated homes and courtyards across the Sotho-Tswana world.
Connecting Culture: The script is purpose-built to write Southern Bantu languages such as Sepedi. Its use on the building connects reading, place, and culture in one glance.
