The worship space to share piety
A Church in Kyoto is mainly for the worship during which 70 Christians of
the area can be accommodated.
The worship space is designed not as the place where the God and the
follower face side by side with the help of the priest, but where the followers
assemble, pray for the God together, and share time and space.
Because of the concept, light is not delivered directly from an aspect, but
indirectly from all the perimeter. Indirect lightning is also functional to
distinguish the letters of the Bible without using artificial light during the
worship. The plan which has no specific aspect enables the chairs to be
arranged freely according to the situation.
The realization of the worship space which a theologian P. Tillich advocated
“Finitude and infinitude of space are the polarity in which the power of
human being gets expressed,in which man creates space and, therewith,
existence for himself.”
“Sacred emptiness is an emptiness by inspiration. Emptiness is filled with
the presence of that which cannot be expressed in any finite form. ”
With the quote of the theologian,
we aimed to create the sacred emptiness, in which both finitude and
infinitude reside.
The inside of the church is walled from the ground level to the two-story
level, and above that, the space is open to the outside environment.
The joints between the wall and the ceiling, and lightning windows cannot
be seen from the chapel.
The light indirectly intrude to the chapel implies the broadness of space.
