This is a renovation project of a two-storey wooden house with a cafe on the ground floor located in the town centre of Matsusaka, Japan. The existing building was long and narrow having no walls in the short-side direction, which had poor structural performance. The client desired to maintain the atmosphere of the cafe so the design focussed on the residential space on the first floor.
The challenge here was to enhance earthquake safety by building load-bearing walls while at the same time to exploit the advantage of the linearity of the building and to preserve or even intensify the flow of the space. This was achieved by erecting non-load-bearing walls in oblique directions to form a wet area and storages so as to create a flowing space. Load-bearing walls which otherwise obstruct the flow are contained in those residual spaces. The resultant geometry together with the folding ceiling creates a variety of places in one continuous space.
