As Institute for Public Architecture 2016 Fellows, Move Matter responded to the NYC Mayor's Housing New York initiative by coupling the need for affordable housing and the inevitable residential development of the City's light manufacturing zoned districts with live/work developments targeted for individuals and small businesses within the Food Industry. The Industry status quo reflects the same disparity of the City's: unbalanced economic growth and living wage; and the import/export of goods, labor, and "waste" byproduct. Empowering the growing number of independent food entrepreneurs with existing and proposed zoning incentives, public and private financial interest, and the design of closed-loop programming, the proposed development model can begin to address the aforementioned problems of the Industry and City, while seeding a more sustainable and equitable growth of the adjacent communities.
