The Seven Canyons Residence, located in
Sedona, Arizona, is a reflection of the site. The Owners also live in Boston, and
while they desired a second home that had a sense of place, they also brought
an east coast sensibility. Surrounded by towering red rock bluffs, formations,
and remarkable canyon views, considerable time was spent determining the correct
project placement to take full advantage of the site. Views and sun orientation
were driving forces in setting up the plan concept. The plan was also
influenced by the Owners’ interest in Anasazi architecture which incorporates flattened
wall planes, simply shaped and linked rooms, and fortified facades that blended
with the surroundings and protected against the elements or intruders. The
western façade is constructed of stone with minimal openings, and marked by the
rounded entry rotunda that mimics surrounding rock formations. The two story
rotunda also houses the artist’s studio that has the feel of a look out. The
Seven Canyons Residence uniquely combines the Owner’s vision with the one of a
kind setting.
