A few months ago, Michelle Rohrer-Lauer, owner and founder of Michelle’s Interiors, began envisioning her design project for a couple from Texas who wanted their second home in Chicago to reflect their southern, Texas style, yet with a Chicago-urban design flare. The award-winning interior designer has completed home design projects for many families and couples in Chicago and in other regions of the nation for many years, but the juxtaposition of these different styles made this one of her most inspired interiors.
For the homeowners, Renee and Ben Hinterlong, the desire for their Chicago tower condominium to feature the fusion of interior styles may have proved challenging for a lesser-creative designer. But, Michelle embraced her client’s goal and set to work creating an interior to seamlessly reflect their love for both regions as well as their passion for travel expeditions.
Another essential prerequisite for Michelle included the task of designing the couple’s high-rise home to be well suited to host their children and grandchildren. She conceptualized a plan that called for well-appointed furnishings, fabrics, lighting, finishes, and art showcasing the design theme, yet with real-world functionality.
Hard to believe possible, she accomplished all of this for them in a streamlined and breath-taking style. Not only do the Hinterlongs love the transitional stylishness of their urban-Chicago condo, the completed interior exudes the comfort of Texas and places they have visited.
Luxury in the Personal Details
“Families typically spend the majority of their time in the living room and kitchen,” says Michelle. With this in mind, the furnishings for the Hinterlong home’s combined living and dining room were carefully selected based on the unique combination of bucolic Texas and Chicago-inspired panache. “The Hinterlongs owned gorgeous, rough wooden side tables and a dining table, which were special finds for them in their home state of Texas,” said Michelle. “So, I paired them with striking-red, leather chairs to give the space a union of varied colors and textures.”
Custom-made, giraffe-print swivel stools for the kitchen breakfast-bar area were personally designed by Michelle. Gaining her inspiration from the homeowners’ love for animals and travels to Africa, she decided upon fabric for the stools of velvet and faux-leather. Michelle appointed them with Texas-style nail-head trim to incorporate the family’s idyllic, southern roots.
Michelle created another custom-made piece for the room. She designed a copper table with a glass top to sit delicately behind the sofa, which provided space for standing artwork as a focal point. The combination of the Texas-themed textures with an urban-posh design can be seen in this and in the rest of the room’s furnishings, lighting, color palette, and art.
Michelle contrasted a palette of warm, neutral-colored paint options with exotic artwork and accessories using the Hinterlong’s personal collection and new pieces inspired by their love of safaris to create an intriguing environment.
“These paint tones were perfect for whole walls or accent areas because they are soothing, visually relaxing colors,” she said. The wall colors were selected due to their versatility and to provide a grounded feel in the transitional interior. However, Michelle chose to add a little drama to the color palate through the use of her client’s artwork. The homeowners treasured all of the artwork in their home because it was art they had brought back from their many travels around the world. “One of my favorite pieces was a large, turquois decorative pot because it added a distinct element, and it brightly accented the gray-toned wall so nicely,” said Michelle.
In a purposeful asymmetric presentation, Michelle hung a collection of handblown-glass floral art along one wall in the living room. She chose the glass sculptures for their spectacular hues of red, orange, yellow, and other colors to generate an eye-caching focal point from all vantage points.
The room was embellished with natural wood surface tables with textured detailing; custom-made brilliant-red chairs; a plush rug to define the seating space; a corresponding ceiling light fixture; and exquisite, colorful dishware displayed in glass kitchen cabinetry.
Beautiful Bedrooms
While the main living and dining spaces in the home tend to get the most attention from some designers, Michelle is careful to concept aesthetic design for bedrooms as well. “I like the place my clients rest at night to be as stunning as any other room in their homes,” she says.
For the Hinterlong’s master bedroom, Michelle decided to use the same theme as the living room to create a well-balanced, yet cozy atmosphere. The master contains a touch of Texas in the form of a fabric reminiscent of animal hide on an ottoman, along with a feeling of modern, bold Chicago with bright-red accent colors and a black leather headboard.
Michelle also had a contemporary window treatment installed, which framed the homeowners’ view of the city. Draperies were custom-designed with red fringe borders, and a hint of elegance was imbued nearby with two shimmering, mirrored nightstands.
When asked about her favorite part in designing the home, Michelle cited the nursery. “One of my favorite rooms was the nursery I designed for my clients’ granddaughter. I still feel like a kid at heart, so decorating a space to be whimsical and full of fun and fantasy is a dream come true for me.”
Instead of overloading the room with the sometimes-expected pink, Michelle decided upon a more neutral palette as a foundation and sprinkled in touches of pink with accessories. As with the master bedroom, the nursery also has a full-length window with an impeccable view of the city. Michelle, designed a custom valance to add decoration and a practical light cover.
Michelle and her team helped the Hinterlongs create their Chicago haven rife with the essence of their beloved Texas home state, but infused with a metropolitan Chicago-chic feel.
“I consider myself very lucky to have been given the opportunity to work with this amazing couple on their second home,” said Michelle. “They did not just want a place to visit in the city; they wanted an intimate, urban second home where they could spend time and celebrate with their family after their granddaughter was born. I believe we gave them a wonderful space to do so.” To learn more, visit: www.michellesinteriors.com.
