The new Goriano Sicoli school stems from a social emergency caused by the April 2009 earthquake. The school, whose construction has been financed by an intense solidarity campaign, is located alongside the tree-lined Valeria Street, close to the City Hall and the public gardens.
Its compact volume, with its horizontal shape and its straightforwardly contemporary architectural language, opens a dialogue without compromises with the historical town centre on the other side of the read. On the north front a light and slender portico structure, rising above the roof height, leans on an irregular weave of white wooden elements designed to establish a refined relation with the acacia and sycamore trees along the street and to emphasize the horizontal aspect of the building.
The school spaces are located on a single double-winged 800 sq. mts. floor, raised 50 cm from the street; the plan is articulated in two different areas separated by the entrance hall: on one side there is the elementary school with 5 classrooms and the toilets, on the other there is the nursery with the common room and the cafeteria, whose access is granted also to other social structures existing in the town.
