Project Story:
Border Space Gap
The subject of gate has always been of great interest in Iranian architecture, the expression of the gate in Iran's past architecture was the first encounter with the program layer of a building, hence how the encounter with a building or a building or a center occurs in a rooted way in the culture Iranian architecture is important. However, in this project, we are facing a scientific-university environment that is a collection for students and those interested in science and technology, and the connection between the concept of head and technology and science and redefining the problem of gate is the main goal and the central idea of the project.
What is a gate? What does it define? What is the difference between it and the wall? What is the relationship between the border issue and the gate? What will be discussed in this text explains the reason for our different entry into the competition and the change of the rules that were determined earlier.
In its general concept, the gate is placed on the border and forms a resistance establishment with the outside and inside space. What determines the boundary between outside and inside brings the reference to the architectural element of the wall. From the time it became a space in China to the Berlin Wall, the wall has been the most important tool to separate and at the same time connect because the wall determines the situation and points in which the connection will take place. Border walls are an exaggerated example of that power. The potential of separation that lies in the nature of the wall. gate, meanwhile, adds a different feature to the previously defined boundary wall, and that is the spatialization of this wall. gate accommodates the program and adds as much as the program asks him to.
In redefining the gate, we came to the conclusion that this wall that stretches and accommodates the program inside. It is divided into two pieces, these two walls are separated in the nature of one wall. This time, however, for us, this transformation from a classic wall (what is referred to as a simple wall format) to a spacious wall that contains a historical narrative of the wall is an issue, and how gate can take an alternative position compared to adopt repetitive forms (in terms of spatial diagram).
Wall:
Historically, after the floor, the wall is the second element that formalizes architecture. It is a separator to define the space and in this sense it is the most frequent element for architecture. The wall, in its boldest form, marked the boundary of the house and then went to the boundary of the city and tested itself there. The wall, in terms of its spatial connection with the city, was very attractive to us in a project like gate, which originates from the wall, and working on its historical concept. How the wall can continue this historical responsibility and turn it into a contemporary project today was very important for our team.
Voyeuristic Gaze:
Architecture promotes voyeurism in many ways because it is an expression of human nature. Space reflects and shapes societies. Gender affects architectural arrangements and forms. As sexual beings, we have sometimes intentionally or unintentionally expressed a desire to “see and be seen in designs. Architectural spaces and environment are our surroundings and are a reflection of our daily life. Different ways of life and different ways of living show the cultural aspects of human sexual instincts. Gender and sexuality issues are inseparable from the idea of eye-gazing in space. Therefore, the main entrance is placed on the border of seeing and not seeing the interior space, where you can both see and be seen. In this project, with gaps in the body of the classic wall and new formations, it tries to react to this nature. Be inherent in the wall. The mesh floors themselves make the movement in space and mixed layers traceable. You can both see and be seen, and you feel this in gate more than in other architectural spaces. Voyeuristic projects are active at the intersection and provide different possibilities for seeing, both inward and outward.
Flaneur:
Walter Benjamin adopted the concept of the flaneur from Charles Baudelaire's "gentleman streetwalker" and developed the concept of the flaneur as an urban researcher and observer. A flâneur is a city dweller, a wanderer and an observer of the flow of street life. A flaneur walks through the city to experience it. The experience of space and life occurs by the wanderer. The wanderer discovers the space and makes it her own. He is curious and his curiosity activates layers and layers. He does not seek material consumption and prioritizes the creative use of space. The real consumer of the space and the main creator of the program on the site is the wanderer. The presence of the subject as a wanderer and a different personality is important in this project. The invitation to stay and explore the spacious wall comes from the wanderer, so the wanderer will be the main user of our main building.
Park:
The main theme of the series that we entered in the main program is the park. A science and technology park. A park is an area of natural, semi-natural or planted space intended for human recreation or for the protection of wildlife or natural habitats. In this project, for us, the most important program that was placed in the middle of this functional wall was the park itself. A park in the middle of this functional wall, a space that allows the subject to move, explore and make himself from it. Park among the walls of the project as the general essence of this complex was and is an important goal for us. The addition of the cafe and space for sitting, resting and wandering tries to pull these spaces from the city into itself and lead to a cross-border interaction with the city.
The gate:
The gate of the Health Science and Technology Park of Tehran University of Medical Sciences is trying to move between these four concepts. It is a reaction to the traditional view of gate and tries to redefine this concept. The tool of this redefinition is the use of the wall element and has kept other programs in between. Moving in the space between these walls and discovering and creating the spaces in between is the main goal of designing this functional wall.
