In mid-2010, the city of Wolfsburg announced a limited, open, EU-wide competition to obtain alternative solutions for the expansion and an overall design concept for the conversion of the school center. The intention was to develop the Fallersleben school center into a learning, living and educational space. At that time, the school center consisted of a heterogeneous building structure, which was due to its constant expansion in response to changed or increased requirements. There was a lack of an overall context and the connection between the buildings. In the competition, it was therefore deliberately decided not to add another free-standing building to the building ensemble. Rather, the design aimed to improve the connection and the transitions between the various buildings and thus to create a connected and consistent school landscape in order to give the school center its own clear face both internally and externally.
