Fallersleben is a district of Wolfsburg in Lower-Saxony. Its school
complex is situated inbetween a residential area with detached houses
and consists of three secondary schools with about 1700 students. The
various buildings were built beween 1965 and 2001, and needed to be
refurbished, reorganized and adapted to an increasing number of
students, new subjects taught and new didactic methods. Instead
of just adding one more building, we decided to demolish one of the old
extensions and therefore design a L-shaped volume connecting two of the
existing buildings. In that building there will be an array of 26
additonal classrooms. In front of every one of them there is a
multifunctional zone being used for practising, teamworking or just
recreating between two classes. Here, the facade can be totally opened
to the inner courtyard. The extension not only adapts itself to
the landscape between the two existing buildings, but also creates the
southern completion of a campus surrounded by different schools. At its
centre, one of the existing buildings is reorganized to accomodate the
library, cafeteria and other commom facilities necessary for full-time
education. Moreover, all those actions help to clearly improve the students orientation on the site.
