Designing an architectural school must be one of the dream projects in the life of an architect, designers, all who directly and indirectly related to this professional fraternity. We were fortunate enough to get a hand-on experience on such a project; much early days in our start up. The client, MVIT university board, for whom we were commissioned to develop the master plan for the 120 acre campus in Bengaluru (integrating the old and the new). And in the process we ended up designing the proposed architectural design school.
The proposed building was to be the part of the master plan vision and at the same time it had to fit in the old campus milieu. The challenges was to have a build form that is dynamic and seeks the contemporary world through the resolution of functional, programmatic, and cultural requirements of the construction of its era, escaping from a mimetic design of the existing ones, proposing itself as an alternative, which interprets timeless values and ethics of campus, such as the rule, sobriety, rigor, discipline in harnessing nature and its energies - embodied in architecture through the rhythm and pure volumes.
The proposed block sits in a demarcated area of about 6 acres guarded with rich foliage of matured trees and greenery. Looking for a solution that could offer decent conditions at low cost, site responsive, less of carbon footprint and at the same time imposing itself as a building of its time, was one of the premises on which it was based. Thus there are facts of the architectural own culture - such as the arcade, which conveys dignity by its design while entering the building and is also a meeting space. The building orientation, typology, massing was based on the climatic approvals and one took advantage of the architectural forms in a functional, structural and logical aesthetic coherence, materialized by combining volumes that correspond to and symbolize certain functions, namely: the volume as dynamic form, which corresponds to the vertical and horizontal access. The typology of “gallery” is emphasized by horizontal lines and the rhythm of the bays themselves, culminating in the vertical circulation of wind towers that dematerializes the volume and assigns a proper value to the architectural form through LAYERED URBANISM.
the principles of layered urbanism was seek to germinate the idea for designing the school
extracting site offerings - forms follows fabric - creative mutation of spaces - embracing visual morphology with urban form and character - harnessing energy
The work that transpired in a period of over one and a half years, unfortunately, is yet to see the light of the day. This project is not unique in terms of an architectural marvel but it had an idea which may be worthy to be discussed and debated. It highlights on the process to establish that nature and energy is very much a part of the design and it is the essence of the creative journey, to be remembered and shared ...
