The School in the Sky addresses future growth concerns in downtown Salt Lake City. Based on the concept of "folding" and nestled tightly in between two existing buildings, the School in the Sky provides preschool/kindergarten facilities for the working families who live in downtown Salt Lake City. The building extends vertically and "unfolds" on top of the adjacent buildings, even providing playgrounds on the top of the existing buildings. It stands as a small step towards infill and is in opposition to the sprawl that plagues the Salt Lake Valley. The building itself incorporates sustainable principles, using recycled materials, living garden walls, rooftop gardens, and more, all in an effort to educate the children who learn within the walls. Here, the School in the Sky becomes a model for future urban schools.
