The project is a U-shaped formation of three buildings surrounding a central playground. The three volumes house two independent educational centers (a preschool and an elementary school). Each school is located in a separate building at opposite ends of the playground. Both are joined by the third body which includes the facilities shared by both programs.
The elementary school is housed in the big three-storey building. It's a linear design. A long hallway divides the floor plan into two areas: along one side of the hallway the services, and along the south-facing side the classrooms. This eliminates glare and allows for maximal luminosity throughout the year.
The shell of the building is made up of a light-weight facade formed by two curtain walls: policarbonate for the exterior panel and glass for the interior. This creates an inner chamber which holds the metal structures and installations while insulating the building thermically and acoustically. The exterior facade is made up of a system of policarbonate panels without visible fastenings. An ample range of colored stripes stylize the building and create a dynamic and interactive game around the children. The library is located on the top floor and is offset from the facade of the third floor. It floats above the playground, an excellent vantage point from which to appreciate the view.
The preschool building is located opposite from the elementary school. It has a single-storey linear construction plan. The light and its scale allow the creation of an environment more appropriate for young children. The south-facing classrooms are shaded by several elements: a covered porch creates the necessary shade and some screens offer protection from the sun. The bathrooms are located in the facade to allow for ventilation and natural light.
A third, more compact and solid, concrete building unites both schools and houses the additional facilities (the gym, the cafeteria, the changing rooms, installations, etc...). It is a building with two great open spaces. The natural, vertical lighting is introduced by skylights. The connection between the buildings is made through two covered patios that cross transversely, creating the vestibules that give access to both centers (the elementary school and the preschool).
This project is a decisive attempt to change educational buildings: it is democratic and respectful of the environment, transparent and sustainable, ecological and symbolic.
The resulting interior organization of the space is the analysis of the determining factors and needs, creating spaces necessary for the difficult and fun daily task of learning and playing comfortably and functionally.
In this type of building, both occupants and users can enjoy their time, relationships and friendships while reaching for and attaining their destiny. We have developed all of this with a noble purpose and the utmost respect for the project's proprietors and users.
