The building is a formal and time response to two different customers. The Owner wanted a flexible building that could adapt to various services and activities. The current Tenant, a space that matched their specific needs.
The land is located north of the circular Guimaraes being bounded northeast by the plot 13A and the existing street layout, northwest by the existing promenade, southwest and southeast by public green area.
Located in the city of Guimaraes, the intervention consists of a service building (small school) with one floor, in a plot of 723.7 square meters.
The proposed building establishes a geometry based on the plot configuration. A pure volume that divides and creates two exterior spaces that work in a complementary and distinct way. The Northwest space creates the entrance, the Southeast an outdoor space to support the school.
The shape of the building reflects the two different outdoor spaces. A rigid facade at Northwest, emphasized by the work on the bricks and the emptiness that marks the main entrance. The Southeast facade opening up completely, taking advantage of the good sun exposure and exploring the inside / outside relationship.
In order to break the rigid formality of the building, we chose a more conceptual treatment of the brick. The facade is developed through two distinct patterns. The first as a way to mark the openings, exploring the sensation of fullness and emptiness, a combination of two bricks laid with a middle joint, creating between them a void of separation. The second, a pattern based on the dynamism created by protruding bricks, looking to explore a continuum of interlinking movement of the three facades.
