School complex (2004)

Firm
Typology
of school (predominant in Russia at the time) involves a duplication of
decisions of floor plans and facades. The purpose of my project  is a departure from standard methods by
design considering the existence of school building as a social institution for
children.
People
already have ideas about what educational institutions look like based on
previous experiences. My project can be regarded as an improvement of the
design of these types of facilities. The ideas incorporated into this
project  the use of modern technology and
an environment that promotes the psychosocial development of children
throughout their learning experience. For example, I plan to diverge from the
idea that all of the desks and furniture in classrooms need to be uniform.
While the aforementioned idea may be initially efficient and economical, it
doesn’t promote individuality and creativity among young students.
Planning
units are considered as levels of interaction:
-
Transformable
cell class – by utilization of pull-down screens that allow any child to study
or read quietly, yet still in the presence of a teacher.
-
Classroom
– designed to enhance communication in groups or a classroom unit.
-
Hall
– promotes group communication within the same age group.
-
One
entire floor of the school building comprises a recreation space, a greenhouse,
a library, and a café.
-
The
main entrance lobby may accommodate the arrival of various levels of students:
High School, Middle School, and Elementary School.
-
The main entrance lobby provides access to a
group of sports facilities and areas for leisure activities.
The floor
covering on the first level of the building is a digital game of letters and
numbers designed to encourage learning and is adaptable to all levels. Everyone
can try to solve it.
Children can
get from floor to floor by stairs or by sliding on a slide.
There also may
be a trampoline built into the floor for fun and exercise.
