This competition winning design is one of a bundle of four schools by Coady Architects, in cooperation with our partners ELD, with developed as part of the Belgian PPP Schools for Tomorrow Programme. The competition brief was to develop a design for this school comprising a new 400 student school building (5,600m2) and a sports hall (1,600m2) on an existing existing post primary school campus in Berlaar, Belgium. The competition afforded the opportunity for innovative and flexible layouts and the inclusion of generous circulation, social and informal learning areas.
The new stand-alone, school building is set on a raised podium approximately one metre above the entrance plaza, and is reached by steps and gentle ramps. A new point of arrival to the Institute is created and all visitors to the campus are guided here before moving on to their particular destinations. Secure, covered parking for 1000 bicycles is provided below the podium.
The sports hall is designed as a major sports, recreation and assembly venue for the school and the community of Berlaar. It is highly accessible from the public realm and the briefed areas all occur at ground level.
