There are breathtaking views of the sea and Saunders rocks from this apartment. Designed for a Johannesburg-based businessperson and his wife as their Cape Town base, it forms a calm backdrop to the expansive Sea views.
We gutted the dated interior. We made the kitchen open-plan and created additional storage in a neat, recessed coffee station. We extended the main bedroom onto the front balcony and changed the bathroom layouts so the main en-suite has views and is open to the main bedroom. The emphasis is on the open-plan living and main bedroom space. The second guest bedroom is smaller and less important. One of the more crucial designs was that of the ceiling and lighting. The kitchen and joinery are also essential parts of the design. We selected and sourced the furniture with the clients. We assisted in designing and briefing in order to make-up items such as the headboards, sofa and dining and lounge cabinetry. The apartment has an excellent feel, given the actual space constraints. Much care and attention were paid to measuring out furniture, and time was spent taping out all the components on the tiled floors.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable process that took our minds off the severity of the initial lockdown.
