SAS Hall is a five story, 119,000 SF building that houses both the mathematics and statistics departments at NC State University. Located on the site of the former Riddick Football Stadium, it is the first of several buildings identified in a master plan focused on redevelopment of this area of campus as a pedestrian oriented academic center.
The L-shaped plan configuration of SAS Hall works in conjunction with the existing Park Shops Building to define a plaza space on the northwest side. This plaza is composed of hardscape and landscape elements forming pedestrian pathways and outdoor social areas. The first and second floors of SAS Hall are dedicated to instructional spaces. A number of options are provided including seminar rooms, a variety of flexible classrooms and a 250 seat lecture hall. Upper floors accommodate faculty offices, graduate student work spaces, conference rooms, faculty lounges and a shared library. The heart of the building is the atrium space that links the two legs of the ‘L’ plan and contains the lobby, the lounges, the library and specialized meeting spaces.
The building façades and massing are directly reflective of the program. The aluminum and glass curtain wall was designed to be responsive to solar orientation by variations of horizontal and vertical shading mullions. The brick veneer complements adjacent campus buildings.
