Architect Takeo Endo designed numerous apartments in northern Osaka Prefecture over the past half-century. These buildings feature experimental yet practical floor plans and sections, remaining highly popular today. However, aging facilities and weaknesses in insulation and soundproofing have become problems. This project is for renovating one such unit. The client couple has lived here affectionately for many years and wishes to continue residing here. They decided on renovation to modify the layout to suit their current lifestyle and to repair outdated equipment.Nevertheless, altering the floor plan and circulation patterns they’ve grown accustomed to over many years would cause significant stress for the clients.Furthermore, in these meticulously designed apartment buildings by the architect, the floor plan, structure, and infrastructure design are highly integrated, making partial modifications difficult. Therefore, rather than starting from scratch with a new layout, we proposed a grafting-like design approach: inheriting the architect’s original layout while evolving it further. We first removed all interior finishes and facilities, reconstructing them using new materials and contemporary concepts. We added insulation and soundproofing, installing indirect lighting along the sides of the structural beams. We altered the kitchen and sanitary layouts, freeing up unused areas to increase storage capacity. However, the spatial connections and circulation respect the original design. The result is a home that feels like two designers from different eras and with different personalities have collaborated to create a single space.
